Bilingual Tests

ASE offers the A1-A9 recertification tests in Spanish. Visit the Spanish Testing page for more details.

Appointment Necessary

The appointment date, time, and test grouping are flexible to suit your schedule. If you purchased multiple recertification tests, you may choose to combine them into a single appointment or schedule them across multiple appointments. Log in to myASE aand click the Schedule Appointment button in the Scheduled Tests tab for 24/7 self-service scheduling or call 800-390-6789 for assistance by phone during normal business hours of 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Eastern Monday – Friday. Testing must be completed by the “Must Take Test By” date displayed in your myASE account to avoid the forfeiture of your tests and fees.

Be Prepared/Sign In Early

Plan to prepare the testing room/environment 30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment and sign in to ProProctor 15 minutes before testing is scheduled to begin to allow sufficient time for the check-in process. Signing in late may result in you being turned away by the readiness agent and/or proctor. If a test cannot be taken because of a late sign-in, all fees are forfeited.

90 Days to Take Your Tests

You will have 90 days from the original date of purchase to schedule an appointment and take your recertifications tests remotely on ProProctor. You should schedule appointments for all tests as soon as possible. If you do not complete testing within 90 days, the untaken tests will expire, and you will forfeit your fees.

30-Day Wait Period

If you take an ASE test and receive a “Pass” or “Fail” test result, you must wait 30 full days before you can purchase and schedule the same test again.

Sales Tax

ASE is required to collect sales tax on applicable purchases, as determined by each state’s laws. If you are purchasing tests on behalf of a tax-exempt organization, submit your exemption certificate to [email protected] before making a purchase. All tax-exempt transactions must be processed through a company account. Orders placed through personal accounts will not qualify for tax exemption.

Appointment Changes

If you wish to change your test date or time, you must first cancel the existing appointment before you can schedule a new one. No changes are allowed within 3 days of your scheduled appointment.

To make changes, use the 24/7 self-service Cancel Appointment option in your myASE Scheduled Tests tab or call 800-390-6789 for assistance by phone during normal business hours of 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Eastern, Monday – Friday.

Missed Tests

There is no refund or reschedule for a missed testing appointment. If you miss your appointment or sign in late to ProProctor, the test is scored as "No Show", and all fees are forfeited. You can register for that same test again, but you must pay the registration and test fees again. To repurchase a missed test, you must wait until the official “No Show” test result is posted to myASE.

Canceling Tests

To cancel a test for a refund, you must first cancel any existing scheduled appointment for that test, then cancel the test itself. You can only cancel tests that were purchased on your personal account. Use the self-service Cancel Test option in your myASE Scheduled Tests tab or call 800-390-6789 for assistance by phone during normal business hours of 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Eastern Monday – Friday. If you are within 3 days of your testing appointment, you cannot cancel the appointment or test. You will receive a No Show result if you do not go to the appointment.

Photo ID with Signature Policy

  • You are required to present a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID in good condition and in its original form that includes your photo and signature. The following forms of identification are accepted:
    • Driver’s License
    • Passport Book
    • Military ID
    • School ID (current students only)
    • Permanent Resident Card or Health Care Card if testing in Canada
  • Testers outside their country of citizenship must present a valid passport book.
  • An expired ID or a photo or paper copy of an ID will not be accepted.
  • The name on your ASE account must match the legal name as it appears on the ID that is presented.
  • You will not be allowed to test if:
    • You do not present an acceptable and valid form of ID.
    • Your identity cannot be verified due to an illegible or damaged ID.

ProProctor Testing Security Procedures

To safeguard the test questions and ensure fairness for everyone, enhanced security procedures are used for remote testing.

  • Personal items (cell phones, electronic devices, watch and other jewelry, keys, wallet, medications, food, drinks, etc.) are not permitted in the testing environment.
  • You will be assigned a small locker to store all your personal items (cell phones, electronic devices, watch and other jewelry, keys, wallet, medications, food, drinks, etc.), so please limit what you bring with you to the test center.
  • Water is allowed in the testing room. No other beverages are permitted. All water must be in a clear or transparent container with a clear or transparent lid or cap. All labels must be removed, and the container will be visually inspected for notes or other test aids. You will need to remove the lid/cap for visual inspection by the readiness agent and/or proctor. If the container does not meet requirements, it must be removed from the testing environment.
  • No jewelry is allowed in the testing room, other than wedding bands and engagement rings. Bracelets, necklaces, earrings, headbands, hair clips, neck ties, etc. must be removed before entering the testing room.
  • Two tissues are permitted at your workstation but must be inspected by the readiness agent and/or proctor prior to starting your test.
  • You will be asked to pull up your pants legs and sleeves and turn your pockets inside-out.
  • You will be asked to remove your eyeglasses for visual inspection.
  • Wedding bands and engagement rings are visually inspected.
  • These screening processes are repeated every time you return from a break.
  • The same security procedures apply to everyone taking tests remotely, regardless of the type of test - automotive, medical, business, or education.
  • If you do not comply with the security procedures and instructions provided by the readiness agents and proctors, testing will not be allowed, and all fees are forfeited.

Breaks

You can take a break between tests but keep it as brief as possible with the recommendation of no more than 10 minutes. If you take a break during a test, the test timer will continue to run, resulting in a loss of time to complete the test. Using your cell phone, accessing study materials, referring to or making notes, discussing test questions during a break is strictly prohibited and subject to cancelation of incomplete or untaken tests and the forfeiture of fees.

Reference Information Used on the L1, L2, and L3 Recertification Tests

If you are taking an Advanced Level recertification L1 or L2 Test, download the relevant Test Information and Composite Vehicle Reference documents and become familiar with the content in advance of your test date. The L1 and L2 Composite Vehicle Reference documents will be accessible as a searchable electronic pop-up during the test.

If you are taking the Advanced Level recertification L3 Test, download the Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Test Information document which includes the L3 Certification Test Reference and become familiar with the content in advance of your test date. The Certification Test Reference will be accessible as a searchable electronic pop-up during the test.

Technical Issues and Test Interruptions

If you experience technical difficulties during the test that prevent you from completing the test through no fault of your own, you must report the issue to the testing provider immediately through e-chat during your testing appointment. ASE is not responsible for technical issues arising from your failure to meet the computer and/or environmental requirements specified on the Online Remote Testing page, your internet connection, or circumstances within your control.

Accessibility Accommodations

AASE is committed to providing reasonable accommodations for test takers with documented disabilities. If you require accommodations, you must submit a request, along with supporting documentation, to be approved by ASE before you register and schedule an appointment. Information regarding the accommodations request process is available on our website or by contacting ASE directly. The only available accommodation for remote testing is extended testing time. If you require other accommodations, you will be accommodated at a test center.

Test Results and Score Report

Your detailed score report is emailed to you after you finish your appointment. Test results can be viewed and printed in myASE within 24 hours of taking the test in most cases.

Release of Test Results and Certification Status

If your employer or school paid for your test, they will be able to view the pass/fail/no-show test result, but not the specific test score. If you paid for the test yourself, only you can see the pass/fail/no-show test result, in addition to the specific test score. You can reprint a score report in your myASE account at any time.

ASE reserves the right to confirm whether you do or do not hold ASE certifications and in which specific areas. This verification will include only the tests you have passed, consistent with the same information provided on your ASE credentials. If you do not want ASE to share this information with anyone else, you can opt out by unchecking the box labeled “Release my ASE status to others” in your myASE account profile. If you choose to opt out, ASE will not disclose your certification status to your employer, OEM, or other organizations or individuals.

Notice to Organizations Using the ASE Tests

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) has developed these certification tests expressly for use in the context of voluntary certification of vehicle service professionals, and all future revisions and refinements will be made in that context. ASE expressly disclaims any responsibility for the actions of organizations or entities which decide to use ASE tests in any context other than ASE's voluntary certification of vehicle service professionals.

Notice to Individuals Taking the ASE Tests

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) reserves the right to cancel any test score, bar participation in ASE programs, or revoke certification if ASE has any reason to question the validity of a test score, suspect misconduct, suspect an individual of creating or presenting fraudulent ASE certificates, score reports or other credentials, or suspect the reporting of fraudulent registration information. ASE may also restrict future participation in ASE programs for conduct deemed inappropriate, unacceptable, threatening, or violent during interactions with ASE staff or testing partners.

By registering for ASE tests and scheduling testing appointments via your personal myASE account or through your employer or educational institution, you acknowledge and agree to these terms and conditions. By registering or scheduling an appointment on behalf of another individual, you affirm that each registrant agrees to these terms.
