Military Testing Program FAQs

The ASE Military Testing Program is a unique testing program created for Army Maintainers but can be beneficial as an occupational competency assessment for anyone who manages and/or maintains Military Tactical Wheeled Vehicles. These tests are designed to represent diagnostic situations and repairs on equipment that Soldier Technicians have experience repairing and maintaining.

Military tests MIL2 through MIL8 are now available to all test-takers. There are plans to create three advanced level tests that will focus on in-depth diagnosis and repair. The scheduled release of these advanced level tests is still to be determined.

The ASE Military Testing Program can be used to earn promotion points for military personnel. Leaders and Soldiers can use test results to develop individual training plans tailored toward areas that require improvement. The military can use test results to focus military-provided education on areas where Soldiers earn lower scores. Additionally, the credentials can also strengthen transitioning Soldiers’ marketability in the civilian job market by validating and certifying Soldiers’ trainability and knowledge of vehicle system fundamentals and diagnostic procedures.

Applicable vehicle technical manuals (TM), TM 9-8000, and hands-on experience should be the primary means of test preparation.

The primary candidates for these tests are Military Tactical Wheeled Vehicle Maintainers and Maintenance Managers, but the tests in this series are open to any technician who wishes to take them. Each test candidate who passes one or more tests and has at least two years of experience in vehicular service and repair will be an ASE Certified Military Technician.

The tests will be administered at an ASE testing site just like all other ASE professional-level certification tests. Find a test center near you.

Each ASE test is created for a specific application. So, as automobile tests are designed to be representative of the automotive industry, in the same way the military tests are designed for military personnel and equipment. Military personnel who have earned this credential have shown that they have the knowledge of the skills required to work competently on Military Tactical Wheeled Vehicles.

The ASE military tests are designed to highlight the knowledge and experience needed to be successful on tests focusing on military trucks and equipment. These can be stand-alone tests or added to existing ASE test certifications held by a technician to further build on their credentials.

See current test pricing on the ASE Registration page.

For all military personnel, the first step is to create a MyASE account.
  1. Locate the credential(s) you want to test for at your Credential Opportunities Online (COOL) site
  2. Army personnel should then contact Army Ignited to start the approval, registration, and payment process. NOTE: You must follow this procedure to have Credential Assistance (CA) pay the registration and test fees. If you register and pay yourself, you will not be reimbursed by the Army.
  3. Air Force personnel should contact their Unit Supervisor who will arrange for payment of the Registration and Test Fees.
  4. Once your registration is complete you will receive a notice and directions for scheduling a time for your test(s) at an ASE test center. Army personnel will receive a duplicate notice from Credential Assistance (CA).

The vehicles covered by the ASE Military Testing Program are:
  • High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV)
  • Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV)
  • Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV)
  • Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP)
  • Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT)

Yes. Technicians must retest every five years to retain their certification. The Military Tactical Wheeled Vehicle recertification tests (MIL2R – MIL8R) are about half as long as the initial certification tests. There is no recertification offered for the Military Fundamentals - MIL1 Test. It is expected that the soldier/tech will progress to the Military Tactical Wheeled Vehicles (TWV) Tests (MIL2 – MIL8).

Each test will have 40 questions (plus 10 pretest questions) and will allow 60 mins of test time for completion.

Every regular-length ASE test has 10 pretest questions embedded within the test for statistical data purposes. These are new questions that have been created for the test. Before being used as a scored item, new questions must be tested to verify that they meet certain criteria.

Questions are written in working meetings where military instructors, working Soldiers, and civilian OEM training staff collaborate to ensure that each question accurately covers the tasks that military wheeled vehicle technicians do in their day-to-day job.
