In this session, John Thornton with Autotrain and Automotive Seminars will discuss engine mechanical testing using a pressure/vacuum transducer. Discussion will show why a cranking vacuum test can be very effective and reasonably simple. This test can be performed in minutes, and can provide a wealth of information regarding the mechanical condition of a gasoline engine. The information generated by a pressure/vacuum transducer during engine cranking can yield valuable information about how well a cylinder breathes. These details can be used to identify compression concerns, cam timing problems, valve sealing issues and other mechanical faults. Discussion will also include an analysis of known-good readings and the diagnosis of engine mechanical failures.
